Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

On Friday 23 October, Hungarian Caritas held a commemoration to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence.

Together, the group honoured the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for Hungary’s freedom and independence.

On 23 October 1956, a student-led demonstration in Budapest grew into a nationwide uprising against Soviet domination and the communist regime. Soviet forces crushed the revolution in early November, and around 200,000 Hungarians fled their homeland in the aftermath. Many made a new life in Australia, including here in Adelaide, where they helped build the community and institutions we still share today.

Glory to the heroes of 1956! 🇭🇺
