On Wednesday 21 October 2026, members of Adelaide's Hungarian community gathered at Parliament House to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence.

The commemoration was hosted by the Hon. Joe Szakacs MP, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, and the Hon. Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia. Community leaders, representatives of Hungarian organisations and schools, local businesspeople and invited guests attended. The Hungarian Club of South Australia was represented by our President, Kathy Tóth, and Treasurer, Steven Tóth.

Minister Szakacs opened the event. He spoke about his father, Joseph Szakacs, who took part in the 1956 Revolution, left Hungary after it was put down and later settled in Australia. The Premier then gave a commemorative address.

The guests were also welcomed by Attila Szabó, Honorary Consul of Hungary in Adelaide. Péter Martonosi, Hungary's Chargé d'Affaires, travelled from Canberra and gave an address. Adelaide's Kaláris Folk Dance Group performed.

After the formal program, guests were served Hungarian food, including mini lángos, stuffed cabbage, Hungarian sausage and goulash pies. To finish, Minister Szakacs took interested guests on a tour of the House of Assembly chamber.

Our thanks to the Minister and the Premier for hosting the commemoration, and to Parliament House for the group photograph, forwarded to us by Attila Szabó.

The event also caught the interest of Daily News Hungary, the Budapest-based English-language news site, which published its own report. Read more and see further photos in their article: Hungarians commemorate 1956 in South Australian Parliament
