Hősök Napja – Heroes' Day Commemoration / 27 May 2026

This year's Hősök Napja — Heroes' Day — carried extra meaning for our community. Our Memorial Stone has found its new home at the redeveloped Hungarian Club of SA, and its first act was to receive a wreath in remembrance of our fallen heroes. Thank you to all who gathered with us on 27 May. 🇭🇺

"We should not only want to remain, but also to stay together."

On 27 May 2026, Hungarian Caritas lunch attendees gatheredto mark Hősök Napja — Heroes' Day — observed each year on the last Sunday of May.

The occasion carried special meaning this year. Our long-awaited Memorial Stone has at last returned to the redeveloped Hungarian Club of SA Inc — an achievement made possible through the hard work of Club President Katalin Tóth and the Club’s executive team. Its first role was a fitting one: to receive a wreath in honour of our fallen heroes.

István DobozyMagyar Harcosok Bajtársi Köre (Hungarian Veterans' Brotherhood) Main Group Leader, delivered the commemoration address — in both Hungarian and English. He opened by extending special thanks to Katalin Tóth and her team for ensuring the Memorial was in place and ready for this occasion. Alongside the Hungarian and Australian flags, the flags of the Vitéz order and the Magyar Harcosok Bajtársi Köre were also present, marking the full ceremonial weight of the day.

His address reflected on the sacrifices of Hungarian soldiers across two World Wars and the 1956 Revolution, and on the enduring injustice of Trianon. His words carried a clear message for our community here in Australia: "We should not only want to remain, but also to stay together."

The wreath was laid at the Memorial Stone by Ákos Nagy (Karitász President), Katalin Tóth (Club President), and István Dobozy — a moment that brought together three pillars of our Adelaide Hungarian community in a shared act of remembrance. The ceremony concluded with the community singing the Himnusz (Hungarian National Anthem) together.

A heartfelt thank you to István, Katalin and Ákos and all who attended. The Memorial Stone now stands as a permanent reminder of who we are and where we come from.

Köszönjük mindenkinek a részvételt és a közös emlékezést.

The Inaugural Goulash Night in our New Club Premises

The first Goulash Night in our new club was a sell-out. We had a full house, traditional food, and a band to keep the room moving from the first course to last call.

Our first course was, as it should be, gulyásleves — the type of goulash soup that makes you go back for seconds… and thirds.

The mains showed off our new chef at the top of his game. Csirke paprikás és nokedli (chicken paprikash and Hungarian style-dumplings) done the traditional way, the noodles tender and the sauce silky. Töltött karaj, the chef's modern take on the stuffed pork classic — definitely worth a second helping. Rántott sajt és zöldségek (crumbed cheese and vegetables), golden and crisp.

And the sides that deserved their place on the plate: sült krumpli (potato wedges), savanyú uborka (pickled cucumber), savanyú almapaprika (pickled paprika peppers), párolt lilakáposzta (steamed red cabbage), and kukoricasaláta (corn salad with mayonnaise).

To close the banquet, patrons enjoyed a mix of palacsinta and mini crèmes for dessert.

And finally, four lucky patrons took home door prizes.  Köszönöm szépen to our generous donors: Neale and Suzanne Arthur of One Foods, Joe & Antoinette Quinzi of Quinzi Chocolates, and Jurlique Burnside

A real thank you to the chef and kitchen team, whose food and service made the night. Thanks also to the volunteers who set up, served, poured, and cleaned; to the bar and floor crew; and to our President, Secretary, and Treasurer for the work that goes on long before and after the doors open.

A strong opening for the new building. The next one already has a lot to live up to.
