CAFE OPENING UPDATE

We have had an amazing start at our recently redeveloped premises at 82 Osmond Terrace, Norwood, and we want to share a quick update with you all.

We were delighted to welcome our members to our Opening Brunch on Saturday, celebrating the official opening of the brand-new Hungarian Club. The morning began with warm welcome speeches from the club's president, Katalin Tóth, followed by Stephen Dobozy. Guests then enjoyed delicious food prepared by our new chef, Attila Tóth, along with drinks and the sounds of Hungarian music filling the club. The brunch was enthusiastically received by everyone who came along.

On Sunday, the Kalaris Dance Group and the Bordó Sárkány performance brought wonderful energy and colour to the new hall. Thank you to all the staff, members, volunteers and performers who made these first events such a pleasure.

It was a wonderful way to begin this new chapter together. We can't wait to welcome back those lucky enough to secure tickets for Goulash Night on Saturday — which unfortunately sold out fast!

After reviewing where things stand with the building, we have decided to delay the opening of our new Hungaria Cafeby one week. This gives us a little more time for the builder to finish off the last details and for our contractors to complete the installation of cafe equipment, so we can give our members and patrons the smooth, warm welcome they deserve.

The new opening date for the Hungaria Cafe is 19 May 2026.

The Hungarian Caritas Seniors' Lunch will proceed as scheduled — we look forward to welcoming our seniors and friends on Wednesday 6 May for the first Caritas lunch in our new premises.

Hungarian Caritas holds its lunch every Wednesday. If you would like to join Hungarian Caritas or make enquiries about the weekly lunches, please contact them directly via email at huncarnorwood@outlook.com or find more information at www.hungariancaritas.org.au.

Thank you for your patience as we put the finishing touches on the new club. We can't wait to see you at 82 Osmond Terrace sometime soon!

After years of planning and building, The Hungarian Club of South Australia is ready to open the doors of our beautiful new home at 82 Osmond Terrace, Norwood, and we could not be more excited to share it with you!

For those who have followed our journey — from saying goodbye to our old premises, through the demolition and groundworks, the cranes and construction, and the long months of anticipation — thank you. This moment belongs to all of us!

May is going to be a very big month. Here is what is coming up:

Saturday 2 May — Members Opening Brunch(members and invited guests only) Our very first official gathering in the new Club. If you are a member, you have been sent an invitation.

Bordo Sarkany plays "Historical Folk Music," blending authentic Hungarian roots with medieval melodies. Using traditional instruments like the bagpipe, whistles, and lute combined with powerful percussion, they create an atmosphere that is both ancient and energetic.

2026 UPDATE

We are thrilled to announce that the Hungarian Club’s new building is almost complete!

If you have been past our site at 82 Osmond Terrace recently, you would have noticed our impressive new club rooms emerging on ground level, with the apartments of our neighbours at The Osmond sitting above.

We expect practical completion of the development at the end of March. We have had the opportunity to view the premises and are happy to report that the new Hungaria Cafe, Hungarian Club Hall and upstairs office facilities look amazing.

We will commence training of our staff and volunteers on the new systems, equipment and operations of the building in March, and anticipate moving in during April.

This will be an enormous job, and we have been working hard on planning our move-in and operations. We will be making announcements very soon about our opening dates, currently planned for early May.

Stay tuned for more information, including the opening hours of our new Hungaria Cafe on the street front of Osmond Terrace, and our official re-opening events- not to mention the return of our famous GOULASH NIGHTS!

We will be announcing details about venue hire post-opening, with a view to commence bookings for our facilities in the second half of the year.

In the meantime, Hungarian Caritas continues to provide lunches every Wednesday at the Lithuanian Club in Norwood. If you wish to join Hungarian Caritas and make enquiries about the weekly lunches, please contact them directly via email huncarnorwood@outlook.com

While we have been waiting for our new building, in 2025, we completed much-needed governance work for the Association.

At our 2025 AGM, the members passed our new Club Rules, which have been updated and aligned with best practice, and we introduced a new suite of membership categories, benefits, and fees for this year. You can view these documents in the Membership section of this site.

Keep an eye on our website for announcements, and you can always call or email us if you have any enquiries.

We look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful new Club very soon!

2024 UPDATE

2024 has been a big year for the Hungarian Club of SA.

With the able assistance and hard work of our volunteers we vacated the premises early in the year, saying a fond farewell to some of our regular hirers. The Club’s precious and archival possessions have been moved to storage, and we are operating our office remotely- including the 2024 membership renewal period. We extended memberships to two years for 2024-6 while the Club is closed, with the next renewals due in 2026 when the new building will be launched.

Hungarian Caritas, among whose members we count many long-standing members of our own Club, have continued to provide lunches every Wednesday at the Lithuanian Club in Norwood. There the members of both organisations have been able to share news, enjoy lunch, and continue to purchase a range of Hungarian goods.

We have held our regular Committee meetings there throughout the year, and most recently gathered for our Annual General Meeting on 24th November. We thank Krystina and our friends at the Lithuanian Club for their continued support in allowing us to hire their excellent facilities and making us welcome.

If you have been past the Club site on Osmond Tce lately you will have noticed that demolition and groundworks have now been completed. The hoarding around the site features our club website address so that we can direct people there to find out what is going on.

Regular project meetings are held between the Club’s executive and Sarah Constructions, where we receive updates on the program, and deal with any issues that may arise. The Sarah Group are responsible for some of Adelaide’s key developments including the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

As we say goodbye to 2024, we look forward to perhaps the most exciting period of our journey, as the massive cranes move onto the site and the actual construction commences in January 2025. We will now see our new building take shape, and we will share images and news via this blog throughout the new year.

As we move closer to our re-opening, we will be finalising our plans for the operation of the new facilities and a series of opening events including exclusive member previews leading up to our grand reopening gala!
